The town in one figure
Only one home in four here is lived in all year round
26.7%
Share of homes that are someone’s main residence. INE, Census 2021: the lowest of any Spanish municipality with more than 10,000 people.
The rest are second homes, holiday flats and houses waiting for a buyer. That shapes the work more than anything else: locks that go months without a key in them, keypads whose batteries run down in an empty hall, keys that have been lent to an agency, a cleaner and a neighbour and never quite come back.
Looking after the locks of a house that stands shut, and the guide on what a long winter does to a lock.
The work
Pick the one that sounds like you
It cannot wait
- Shut out Keys left on the kitchen table of a beach flat, a bag lost somewhere between the Centro and La Roqueta, a key that snapped in a cylinder full of grit. The phone is picked up at night as readily as at noon, and you are told plainly how long the drive will be.
- Opening a door Flats in the blocks behind the beach, bungalows and townhouses on the urbanizations, the low houses of the old grid and their street gates. The latch and the cylinder are tried first; drilling comes last and only once you have agreed to it.
- Locked car Keys on the seat at the beach car park, in the boot with the towels, or in a bag on the back seat by the market. The door is opened without a scratch so the keys can come out, and that is the whole job.
- After a break-in The forced door made to close and lock on the first visit, with a written note of the damage for the insurer. After that, if you want it, a high-security cylinder and a guard plate for a house that will stand empty again.
It can be booked
- Changing a lock Cylinders worn by sand and salt, keys still held by former tenants, a builder or an agency you no longer use, multipoint locks that need lifting on the handle. Booked for a day that suits, and the old keys stop working the moment the new cylinder goes in.
- Second homes Most homes in Guardamar are not lived in all year. Locks checked before you fly in, keys gathered back from whoever has them, and a plan for the agency, the cleaner and the neighbour who waters the plants.
- Sliding doors Aluminium and uPVC terrace doors with hooks that miss their keep, rollers that drag, and tracks that fill with sand blown off the beach. The lock, the keep and the running gear are put right together.
- Shops and bars Shops, bars and restaurants that open for the season, offices in the town and the businesses round the port. Doors opened, cylinders changed and shutter padlocks freed after months of sea air.
- Safes A code nobody remembers, a keypad dead after a winter with nobody home, a safe left in the wardrobe by the people who sold you the flat. Opened with as little harm as the safe allows; new safes bolted down so they stay put.
Sand and sea
What a town built on dunes does to a lock
A hundred and thirty years ago the dunes north of Guardamar were moving into the streets. Between 1897 and 1929 the engineer Francisco Mira had them held with fences of reed, then grasses, then some 600,000 pines: the pinada between the town and the beaches today. The sand has stayed put, mostly, but fine grains still ride the wind into anything with a gap.
That is why a key starts to grind in a street door near the beach, and why the track of a terrace door fills up over a winter. Oil is the wrong answer: it holds the grit and turns it into paste. What to do about sand in a cylinder is in the guides; when it has gone too far, the cylinder is replaced on a day that suits you, and sliding terrace doors have a page of their own.
Eleven kilometres of beach also means salt. It works on brass and steel more slowly than the sand does, and shows as a stiff latch or a padlock that seizes on a shop shutter between one summer and the next.

A call, start to finish
What happens after you ring
-
You say where and what
The street and the area, and what the door or lock is doing. A photo and a pin on WhatsApp help more than any description.
-
You hear how long the drive will be
An honest estimate for your address at that hour. Nobody promises ten minutes they cannot keep.
-
The price is agreed at the door
Once the lock has been seen, and before any work starts. If you would rather not go ahead, you say so then.
-
The job is done, and explained
What was found, what was done and what to watch for, with a receipt for your records or your insurer.
Commitments
Promises that hold on every job
- The latch and the cylinder are tried before any drill comes out of the bag.
- The price is agreed before the work, never after it.
- Proof that the house, car or safe is yours is asked for before it is opened.
- An honest estimate of the drive, never a promised arrival time.
- The phone is answered in English and in Spanish.

Asked often
Before you pick up the phone
Do you come out to El Raso and the urbanizations, or only to the town?
All of the municipality: the old town, the beach and the port, El Raso and the rest of the Campo, El Moncayo, Los Estaños, Lomas del Polo and Pinomar, Los Secanos and Costa Bella. San Fulgencio, Rojales and La Mata are covered too.
I live abroad and the house is empty most of the year. Can you help from a distance?
Often, yes. Most of the arranging is done by phone, WhatsApp or email: who will be at the door, who holds keys, what needs looking at. Proof that the house is yours is asked for before anything is opened or changed.
Can I pay by card?
The price is agreed with you on site before any work begins, and you pay once the job is done. Accepted: cash, card or Bizum.
Is there anything you will not do?
Yes. No keys are cut, copied or supplied, for a house or for a car, and nothing is programmed. With a car, the work is opening it when the keys are locked inside, and nothing more.
Got a door that will not let you in?
